Inspiring Story of a Remarkable Women

Hey Coach Rahz here, with an inspiring story from one of our amazing clients. Jillian has become way more than just a client, she has become a friend, mother, and mentor to my team and I. I believe we all require a Jillian in our lives. She brightens up my cloudy days, and brings laughter and love to the studio every time she walks in. One word comes to mind when I think of Jillian: STRENGTH.  Here is her story of Strength, Perseverance and a “Never Give Up” attitude in her own words…

When Rahz suggested that I have a story worth sharing with other women, I agreed that my recent experiences might resonate with both men and women. I believe all of us meet up with challenges at different times in our lives – often defying prediction and planning. Such was my experience, beginning mid-June 2010.

On a Sunday morning in June, my husband (Paul) woke up to find me passed out on the floor of our bathroom. After waking me up, he guided me back to our bed and called my family physician. I was still with my trusted physician from central New Jersey – so he had to dispense advice from afar. He told Paul to get me to the hospital as quickly as possible. While I have no memory from being on the bathroom floor until eight days later; I am told that I insisted on freshening up before accompanying Paul to the hospital. When we entered the emergency room at Glen Cove Hospital – I summarily waived off offers of wheelchair assistance. Not only did I appear unperturbed, I seemed very upbeat to those around me, despite the fact that I exhibited tremors so pronounced that I was literally “shaking like a leaf.”

I do not remember anything from my eight-day stay in Glen Cove Hospital. I know now that I was in the intensive care unit, with an army of physicians swarming around my bedside trying to get a handle on what was going on for me. They conducted a myriad of tests – determining that I probably had had a drug reaction to a medication prescribed for a tenacious migraine. On Tuesday morning the doctors thought that my condition was improving – but by the end of the day concerns were mounting over my kidney function. By Friday I was in acute kidney failure and was transferred to North Shore University Hospital for dialysis. The physicians at Glen Cove suspected that I had also developed two extremely rare blood disorders: HUS and TTP – disorders affecting the integrity of the red blood cells and platelets respectively.

The probability of a person developing either one of these blood disorders is approximately one in a half a million people – yet tests conducted at North Shore confirmed that I had both. I was given a three percent chance of survival. Treatment for these blood disorders is a blood cleaning process called Plasmapheresis: a lengthy process requiring three and a half to four hours to complete. I experienced many unpleasant side-effects during each treatment – from nausea and severe abdominal cramping to intense body chills. For nine weeks, I received plasmapheresis every day, plus three and a half hours of dialysis every other day. Every second day was excruciatingly brutal; as dialysis is accompanied by its own set of nasty side-effects.

Discharge from North Shore in mid-August was not a “get out of jail free card.” I was transferred to a rehabilitation facility that also provided dialysis. After being bed-ridden for nine weeks I had to learn how to sit upright, stand, and eventually walk again. Greg (Mr. Nutrition) gave me valuable advice on what to look for in a rehabilitation program, as well as sharing a personal recommendation. Every day for two weeks I worked with a physical therapist for two one-hour sessions, and for an additional hour with an occupational therapist. By the time I left rehab I could walk with a walker, climb stairs with a handrail, and dress myself.

Despite early assurances from my first nephrology team, whom I eventually fired, I did not regain my kidney function. Many challenges accompanied my return home. I was still physically very weak and required dialysis three times a week. I was in complete renal failure; so that short of a transplant, I would require dialysis indefinitely. I had to learn the parameters of a renal diet and measure my fluid intake to the ounce (maximum 32 oz/day). My new nephrologist started campaigning for a transplant as soon as I began outpatient dialysis, advising me to “never become complacent with dialysis.” I felt overwhelmed! At the outset, the notion of an organ transplant seemed out-of-reach to me. As the weeks went by, my doctor stressed that transplantation was a necessity, not only for my survival, but also for a certain quality of life. In addition to all of these new issues confronting me – I had other matters that were waiting for my attention since June – not the least of which was the completion of my Master’s thesis in Developmental Psychology.

I contacted my thesis adviser while I was in rehab. She suggested that it would probably be best for me to set aside my thesis and concentrate on my health. Her advice did not sit well with me; as this would mean I would give up the opportunity of completing my degree. I had already satisfied 75% of the academic requirements for my degree – quitting was not an option. So I became reacquainted with my partially-completed thesis – working on it as my physical and mental energies allowed. On June 20, one year plus seven days since my initial hospitalization, my thesis was accepted by the university, and ten days later a Master of Arts degree was conferred upon me.

Eight days after I completed my degree requirements, I received a kidney from my husband. The fact that Paul was a match was nothing short of a miracle – as we are not biologically related and I am a rare blood type. Most people react to my story with the comment “It wasn’t your time.” While this sounds like a sage explanation – I invite you to look back over the last twenty months of my life through another set of lenses.

I attribute my recovery and good fortune to several factors: my indomitable will to live; the love and support I received from Paul, my children, sister, mother, and my friends near and far; learning and strictly following a renal diet plan; making every dialysis appointment; the attentive care I received from many physicians overseeing my treatment at both hospitals; the professional support and inspiration from my treating nephrologist; building a strong network of other physicians – while not hesitating to let go of those doctors who did not meet my needs; resuming my work-outs with Rahz twice a week, every week, from November until transplant; contacting the Transplant Center at LIJ North Shore University Hospital; the exceptional knowledge and skill of this transplant team; making and keeping all of the doctors’ appointments necessary for a medical clearance for an organ transplant; realizing a dream – by completing my degree in psychology; putting my intention out to the universe that I was going to have a kidney transplant; and greeting each new day as an opportunity for change.

What have I learned from these experiences? Never give up – because you cannot predict what tomorrow will bring. Each new day is an invitation to experience something new – if you are open to the possibility.

WoW… is all I can say about the weather here on the east coast this summer. I’m loving it! I don’t like the cold, so you will not hear me complaining about the heat. I did have a scary moment this week when my grandmother’s power went out and I didn’t know about it until the next day. If you haven’t heard me talk about my grandmother, she is my Rock. She is my inspiration to live life with passion and zest. She never allows her tough life situations or challenges effect her positive outlook on life. Can you image if we all had her mindset: live life, love people, and as she always says, “Keep on keeping on.” Ok, enough about grandma and on with today’s post.

Over the past few weeks here at my Locust Valley personal training studio, I’ve been getting a few questions about “Burning the Baby Fat.” So I’m going to breakdown two powerful concepts that will help any mother struggling with burning their post baby belly fat fast. If you’ve followed me or been coached by me you know I start everything with mindset.  Why? The main reason is that I’ve found that most people will not achieve their goals and ambitions without having the right mindset from the start.

So what is the right baby burning, fat melting, body transforming mindset?

Here’s the secret I’ve used to helped hundreds of Long Island women shed their unwanted baby fat fast. Are you ready?

Believe, Believe, Believe!

Since opening my MetaBurn Fat Loss Studio in Locust Valley, I’ve met so many wonderful mothers all struggling with the same frustrations, challenges, and failed attempts to get their pre-baby bodies back. After talking with them I’ve found one trend that sticks out like a sore thumb, they don’t really Believe they can regain their pre-baby bodies back. In my opinion the reason for this is they are afraid to fail, they have accepted that this is as good as it gets, and some aren’t really committed to do the work necessary to burn the baby fat. Most mothers wish they could have a baby, and then bang a few weeks later see their bodies just shrink back to pre-baby size. Well news flash, that’s not going to happen, but I’m here to share that it’s easier than you think, and I have so many mothers reclaiming their bodies in 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and losing serious pounds. My client Brenda lost all her baby fat in about 8 weeks following the MetaBurn Fat Loss system. So here’s what I need you to do right know so that we can change your belief system about what you can and can’t do. Yes, I’m going to ask you to write something down on paper.

It’s called an incantation and it’s a power strategy to reprogram your mindset.

” I am 100 % committed to reclaiming my beautiful, attractive, healthy body back, and nothing will get in my way.”

Exercise:

Read this incantation aloud for 2-5 minutes per day for 21 days. If you’re truly committed this one exercise will give you the motivation, energy, and excuse shattering strength like nothing you’ve ever experienced in your life.

The second concept I will share with you in is post is my famous 3 P’s Method:

Prioritize, Plan, Prepare

This concept is simple yet what I have found is that mothers and people in general just don’t get it.  You’ve probably heard that success leaves clues in its wake. Well, successful mothers who have transformed their bodies back to their pre-baby status utilize the 3p’s method in some form. I’m not going to go into great detail here because I have created a video that really digs deep into the 3P’s method and you can watch the short video and get all the details. For the purpose of this post here’s a basic summary of the method.

Prioritize:

This means making Health, Fitness, Nutrition, and Your Body a priority. Over my 11 years and among the thousands of mothers I’ve met and coached, the common trend is family first, me last. I completely understand that it’s a mother’s priority to take care of her family, but at what cost to her happiness? If she hates her body, feels unattractive whenever she tries on clothes, doesn’t want to go out because she feels like she looks fat, or worst of all, covers her body up in big clothes to hide her pain of not loving who she is. This has to stop because there are too many mothers who deserve to feel great about their bodies and most importantly, love themselves for creating the person they are. I empower you mothers to put yourself first sometimes and prioritize your life around your feelings and wants sometimes. You will immediately experience a sense of power and energy.

Plan:

One of my favorite quotes is “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Simple to understand: Plan your meals, plan your exercise, plan your life around what’s important and has value to you. Time isn’t an excuse, because time is the only equal factor we all have. Hope you’re doing well.

I’ve got a quick post that I feel will help you get your butts off the couch and moving in the direction of feeling better, and looking hotter. Over the last 11 years I’ve work with thousands of people, and heard every reason, and procrastination story possible. We are all procrastinators. Either consciously or subconsciously we delay, stall and put off various tasks that will make a positive difference in our lives. Procrastinating can be a learned trait from our parents or derived at birth. Habits are very hard to change without a conscious, deliberate action taken on our part.

Traditionally, procrastination has been associated with perfectionism, a tendency to negatively evaluate outcomes and one’s own performance. It is an intense fear and avoidance of judgment of your abilities by others. Heightened social self-consciousness, anxiety, recurrent low moods, and workaholism are the results of compulsory procrastination. In addition to those I’ve found that laziness, lack of coaching, knowledge, and accountability are all key reasons for most people to procrastinate when it comes to getting fit and Healthy.

Here’s my list of the top 3 reasons to end the procrastination game forever

  • Obesity – All time High in America, and headed toward being the number one killer

Discipline is the Key to Success

Day 4

Discipline: The single word and character trait that separates the doers from the do nots.

Well, I’m clear through my first 4 days of fasting and cleansing, and today was awesome. I organized a golf outing with a few personal business contacts and friends, something I planned before I committed to doing the master cleanse. When I originally decided to organize this outing I thought it would be great to play golf, network, and have some good cheat food with a few beers. It turned out to be an outstanding day of golf, great conversation and lemonade mix for me. My contacts and friends ate hot wings, mozzarella sticks, grilled turkey burgers and sweet potato fries. In addition to all that good greasy, heart attack food they washed it down with cold dark beer. I share these details with you because I was cool with just hanging and talking. I didn’t have the hard cravings to indulge one bite. Yes, the food looked good, but my stomach never made a noise. I sat there and had a warm glass of Mint tea, and 8 oz of lemonade mix. I started this post with the word discipline, well that’s exactly what you have to have and develop to stay true to the master cleanse. It’s not superhero discipline, just set your goal to complete it and don’t allow temptation or cravings derail your success. I feel stronger, I have more energy, I wake up with total ease, and most importantly I know I’m doing something great for my body. If you’re on the fence about trying the master cleanse, get off the fence and give it a go, you’ll be happy you did by day 4. Talk to you tomorrow. By the way I played very well in temperatures that would make a desert man ask for a fan. This is power, get started today.

Day 5-Friday

Boredom vs. Hunger

Do you know the difference between boredom and hunger? During this amazing experience I’m learning this lesson daily. We tend to eat out of boredom and one of my personal opinions is that’s why America is so overweight. We’ve become emotional, boredom eating machines. I am proud to say today wasn’t hard at all. I’m going to keep this post quick and short because I think the weekend just might have a few surprise for me. I’m heading into day 6 and 7 and my first weekend doing my Master Cleanse and I expect it to be a little challenging because I’ll have less activities to occupy my time. Time and what to do with it is that difficult part of fasting because we’re so program to use food as a time consumer in our lives. Boredom creates craving and temptation. I’m sure I’ll have a few of these tempting moments but I know I’ll stay strong. Till Saturday be well, and start your master cleanse today.

Day 6

Four days remain in my first 10 day cleanse, and I’m getting a little tired of lemonade and water. I woke up today feeling good, no challenges or detox symptoms. I felt a bit tired later during the day, but I think that is due to my workout on Friday. If you’re trying to save money get started on the master cleanse today, I haven’t spent more than $3 dollars all week and that was for a water at my golf outing. I’m excited to do some cardio tomorrow and then chill. Sunday is my chill and relax day. I’ll weigh myself Monday to see what my 7 day release is and check my body fat. I don’t expect it to change too much because I know much of the weight I will release on this detox will be water and a little muscle. The goal for me is to slowly come off the detox on Thursday and Friday and continue a RAW FOOD experiment for 7 days following my master cleanse. The energy and clarity I have right now is amazing. My body feels better than it has in a long time, and I’m really excited to continue to explore this new way of living. Health is my life and I believe you have to experience different ways of living in order to find what works best for you. I personally encourage anyone seeking answers about detoxing or just becoming healthier to get started on something today. Find a mentor or a professional health coach to assist you and guide you in the right direction. My mentor was Peter Glickman because after reading his book, I was intrigued to find out more about the master cleanse and learn for myself the effects on your body. Roslyn Personal Trainer Master Cleanse Experiment (Day 2 & 3)

Day 2

Hello and welcome to day 2 of my master cleanse experiment. Today was a little challenging do to work obligation. I found it a little difficult to concentrate, but after having 8 oz of the lemonade mix I was good for another few hours. The toughest part has been the salt water flush first thing in the morning. After work I went home and got an energy burst, which happened the first day too. Weird because you would think because I’m not eating I would be beat. I decided I would go workout because I felt the need to get some physical activity in, and I had plenty of energy to get through a low level intensity workout session. I didn’t push it to the limit because I wanted to test how I would feel after.

I’m getting my required amount of water each day, which is 82.5 oz per day. Daily requirement as explained by Peter Glickman is half your body wight in oz. Sleep isn’t too bad, I feel I’ve been tossing and turning a little more than usual, not sure why just yet. So that is my second day in a nutshell. I have to say this isn’t as hard as I first thought, and I’m really enjoying the challenge. I even watch Man VS Food and was able to control any cravings. I did watch while drinking my laxative herbal tea before bed.

Day 3

Today was smooth sailing and went by really easy. I didn’t do the salt water flush today and it was a time challenge. I had to be at a meeting and didn’t leave myself enough time to allow the flush to work, and I didn’t want to run into any challenges. I didn’t experience any real issues, but I will say I was a little irritable at the office. Just short with my assistant and partner, not sure if that is a lack of carbs or just part of the detox process. Peter Glickman says that irritability is your body dealing with the toxins being released and usually after the next bowel movement you’re fine. I’ll let you know tomorrow, because I have a lot of projects and meetings with my staff and I don’t want to bite their heads off every five minutes. No real cravings and I don’t feel hunger like I though I would. It’s really amazing how programmed we are to think we need to eat whenever we feel hunger. I’ve clearly discovered the difference between cravings, boredom, and true hunger. Learning this has been such a huge bonus, and I can’t wait to share this experience with my clients and friends. I did my workout again and I felt strong, and had plenty of energy. I did a TRX, and body weight program mixed with a little free weights. Total workout was about 48 minutes. I did not do any aerobic work today, but I will be rowing on the concept 2 for 2 miles tomorrow day 4. Here’s my take on energy, it’s all in your state of mind and what nutrients you put into your body. I’m going to step out on the limb here, but eat crap and feel like crap. Period. See you tomorrow for Day 4.

This is actually a great story and a live case study that shows proof you can make this happen in a safe way. You don’t have to starve yourself or kill yourself in the gym. It’s simply just following the plan consistently. That is what most people have a hard time doing because they do not have a strong enough motivating factor to keep them on track with their nutrition plan.

We have been coaching Adam Grayson (who is the client of the month with his beautiful wife Brenda because they are kicking arse together) for about 4 weeks now. Every week he comes in for a 30 minute nutrition coaching session to go over his plan.

As usual, Adam drops between 3-4.5 pounds each time he comes in. So before I get deeper into the story, let me tell you the reasons why he WON’T succeed:

1. He started the nutrition coaching program a week before he had to go on a business trip which required alot of his time, energy, and focus. He is in the entertainment industry which means he is responsible for setting up the talent for shows/events, creating the logistics behind the scenes with lighting, stages, and crops, and making sure his clients and artists are well taken care of for the night.

2. He started the nutrition program on a Wednesday and received his meal plans Thursday night. Here comes the weekend!

3. He started the nutrition coaching program a little over 2 weeks before Passover. We all know how much food are on those tables during that holiday.

4. He went out to dinner twice last weekend with his family. It’s family you have to go eat with them right?

Where most people say it’s not possible, Adam said it’s possible. He didn’t buy into any excuses, he didn’t fall prey to those who try to push you off your plan, he didn’t allow time to be an issue, and he never once doubted himself.

Remember when I said he WON’T succeed due to these factors? I was being a little sarcastic because most people would see this as impossible. But we are here to tell you it is case in point with Adam. Here are the reasons why Adam did succeed:

1. He comes prepared to every coaching session. Always has his food journals, brings his snacks for the session because that’s his snack time, has his questions ready to fire away, is 100% honest about everything that happened in the last 7 days, and most importantly he walks in with a confident smile.

2. When we make a recommendation he utilizes it. We spoke highly how our clients success rate increases when they use Shaklee products; he ordered a full month’s worth of supply that day. We wrote out a detailed nutrition plan; he bought all the products necessary for the next 3-4 days. We asked him to take a select few things out of his plan; he immediately took them out and doesn’t have a single craving for them.

3. Adam is training with weights and swimming in conjunction with his fitness program. There is nothing more powerful then having a fitness and nutrition coach at the same time devising a plan together as professionals. You absorb so much value and your life changes in a very short period of time.

4. He balances out his day and makes time to eat. Most people get too busy and forget or they over eat at certain points. Adam makes sure his body gets what it needs at certain times.

5. He utilized a scientifically proven metabolic test which allows our nutrition coaches to pinpoint exactly how many calories he needs to reach his goal on an everyday basis. On top of that his meal plans are adjusting with the proportions of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

6. His plan is made up of about 45-55% of carbohydrates. Who would of thought that an intake on that level would help you lose weight? Adam doesn’t fear the carbs because he trusts us as professionals to make sure they are the correct ones and balanced throughout the day.

7. Lucky number 7 which is the biggest one yet. Adam doesn’t have a single doubt in his mind that he won’t be successful. Remember that video link we had above with Will Smith? If you haven’t watched it yet, you MUST so this last point can sink it.

Most people’s lives are a direct reflection of the expectations of their peer group

Let me repeat that “most people’s lives are a direct reflection of the expectations of their peer group”

That’s not something we formulated here at Breakthroughs To Fitness. This is what we model from Tony Robbins.

If you ever listened to his audio CD Get The Edge he talks about a stroy where he was invited to raise the standards of the military.  The issue that this group ran into was when they leave the military, their standards drop to the expectations of their peer group.

5 Keys To Raising Your Standards:

1. First make that decision that you want to change.

2. Expand your comfort zone by exiting the peer group that no longer serves your expectations in life.

3. Seek out a peer group that is better then you.

Note: this step can be intimidating at first because you may have beliefs that you are not good enough.

4. Raise your expectations for those that are above you in standards.

Note: this will drive you to be better

5. Mentor someone that was in your shoes. Hand down your tools, lessons, and inspiration.

These 5 steps are key to raising your standards in life. This is a system that we follow here at Breakthroughs To Fitness. Not only do we follow it for our coaches, but we mentor our clients exactly how to raise their standards by increasing our expectations of them.

Breaking News……………………………..

Everyday we are challenged to learn new and exciting lessons. This morning I learned a painful lesson of patience and better time management. I would like to start this month message with a quick story of how quickly life can hand you an uncomfortable situation and opportunity to grow.

I woke from a very deep sleep after a extremely exciting few days working with clients and preparing for the How to Make 2009 Your Healthiest and Best Year Charity Event. I thought this was going to be another wonderful day and at 7:06am that all changed within 10 second. I lost control of my car and slid into coming traffic hitting one car and just missing another. Why am I sharing this story? First it’s moments like this that make you really appreciate living. Last night I had the opportunity to live a dream; I hosted an event where I was the featured speaker and if I say, I did pretty well. The scary point to this story is less than 9 hours later I was in a situation where I could have lost my life. Yes that real as it get, Time is precious, so it my mission to inspire, educate and empower people everywhere to make the necessary changes in there lives to live everyday as if it where there last. I want people to feel, look, and experience everything life has to offer because only the higher powers know when all of this we call LIFE can END…

As I write this I’m living the most amazing dream anyone could ever ask for and I hope to never wake from it. I have great friends, thriving business with a truly wonderful partner, and most importantly a loving grandmother. This morning I wrecked my car, and less than one hour later I was back living the dream.

You may be asking how he can do that. Its simple just understand there is a lesson in every situation and experience in life. Always look for the positive and stay focused on your dreams and goals. As long as I have my health and breathe in my lungs I will continue to live with passion, excitement, and enthusiasm.

2009 is going to be a wonderful year, but it will only become what you desire if you set yourself on fire with passion and stay Positive. We look forward to continuing to deliver our best and most up to date health and wellness information every Month.
