High Fructose Corn Syrup Is Great For Us

Ok so here at Breakthroughs to Fitness, we were being a little smart with that title. As you may have seen, the Corn Refiners Association has ran a massive campaign to recreate the poor image of high fructose corn syrup. If you have not already seen the commercials, take a look at one of them below:


In these commercials, they link HFCS to be all natural, just as good as sugar, etc. Since when was sugar good for us?

It’s almost quite impossible to find foods in grocery stores without HFCS. Take a look at the all natural foods and let us know what the ingredients read. In fact, alot of the so called “healthy” breads even contain HFCS.

If you take a look into the scientific world, there are numerous studies linking HFCS to obesity and insulin resistance. Now we all know that there are always studies to go against this statement. So how do we know who to believe…

Just ask yourself this. Do you consider drinking a coca-cola a healthy item to be part of your daily nutrition? Of course, we are able to enjoy ourselves, but the consumption of HFCS is way to high.

There are plenty of Associations out there that will defend their product when it affects their profits. That is a reasonable business objective. However, to run a massive campaign to make people feel like your product is safe, when indeed it is not, is just a scumbag move.

Do your best to avoid foods with HFCS and eventually these Associations will listen as their profits dwindle. In the end you are responsible for your body and the decisions you make. We can only give you our guidance.

The B2F WELLNESS SHOW Hosted By Coach Rahz Slaughter It’s been one of those days you wish you had more often. Today I woke up feeling great. Got into my very cool 2008 Honda Fit which is this amazing (Vide Blue Pearl) color and drove to my private training studio. My client was right on time, which is a surprise for a 7am Saturday morning. We jumped right into a serious 50 minutes iron lifting, sweat dripping, legs burning, why am I doing this to myself workouts. O’yeah I forgot the best part it was payday too :-) $$$. Then I change clothes, put my lifting gear on and the story begins all over. I did 3 setsof tabata’s at 20/10. All that means is I did a various exercises for 20 seconds and rested for 10 seconds in between. When you do this type of work you continue this 20/10 split for 8 rounds which adds up to 4 minutes of exercise per set. If you’ve never tried this really fun fat burning workout, then you’re going to be surprised because it is alot harder than it sounds. If you don’t believe me check back to this blog in a few days, I’m going to post a Tabata workout for beginners. Tabata’s are especially great for burning fat, and increasing your lung capacity.

Anyway Back to my Awesome day, Next I went home and caught up on a ton of Admin. work, that had been building…

Sometimes things just never go your way…

Yesterday was a challenging day.

We are all faced with challenges.

So here’s what happened:

* I locked my keys in the car

* Coach Rahz had 11 clients to train so it was impossible to work on a certain project that needed to be complete

* Our graphic designers sent us a file that could not be changed, so therefore I can to recreate the brochure from the beginning

* Hofstra Universities lab software would not allow me to open certain files to change

*These brochures needed to be completed yesterday to hand in today so we have them for a conference in California

So as you can see, a few challenges that were in our way, yet I never said it was a terrible day. We are a solution oriented company that does not allow anything to stop us from our mission which is to empower, educate, and inspire individuals to reach optimum levels in their health and wellness.

SOLUTION: We met at 5am this morning at a 24 hr Dunkin Donuts to figure out a solution. We solved the problem of the borchure and it is being sent to our printer tonight.

But we also figured something out. We were the freshest and most creative in the mornining together. Therefore, we will be adopting meetings at 5am 3-4 times a week. So the original challenge actually led us to trying something new.

When in your life have you been faced with challenges you thought were too difficult to solve or overcome? Did you attempt to try something new as a possible solution?

Sometimes it takes a deep breathe and relaxtion to create clarity in your mind.

So the next time you are faced with a challenge, close your eyes, take a deep breather, and come up with possible solutions until one of them works.

Breakthroughs To Fitness is setting the bar high

I just read a recent email from one of my colleagues in the industry. Brain Grasso is the creator of the IYCA (International Youth Certification Association) which can be viewed at the Hands down, this is the elite of youth certifications which is why I am pursuing a level 2 cert from them.

I will only post part of his email since it is long. It does not pertain to youth training, but how most trainers and the public view personal training.

In this true story, you will see why only a tiny percentage of the population actually use a personal trainer and how many trainers are damaging the industry and in turn the overall future of personal trainers.

Does This Make Sense to You?

Because of potential criminal fallout, I’m not allowed to tell you
where I saw this, greg.

What’s criminal is the fact that this happened at all.

And the criminals in this case shouldn’t be allowed to hide behind
our legal system.

But what can I say?

That’s the law I suppose.

So, with the details muddled and the offenders protected, let me
tell you what happened while I was working out yesterday.

A Personal Trainer was conducting a training session with a
middle-aged client.

That in itself is not a story.

The fact that I even noticed them at all was based on what I kept


Groans of effort.

Groans of effort that eventually turned into screams.

I mean tribal screams – the kind you usually only hear from elite
power lifters or world-class bodybuilders.

Rep after rep after rep, this middle-aged man was literally
screaming, cursing and grunting his way through the workout.

All the while, his Personal Trainer was paying literally no

I mean at all.

He wasn’t even watching.

His eyes were fixed across the gym at a couple of other Personal
Trainers who had joined the rest of the people in the facility as
we all watched in horror at what was going on.

Only, the Personal Trainers weren’t in shock, disbelief or concern.

They were laughing.

The Personal Trainer who was actually conducting this training
session was looking at his buddies and laughing.

Rep after rep after rep.

I could go on about how poorly the middle-aged client was
performing each repetition and how dangerous his movement patterns
were, but that is not the point of this story.

And it isn’t where I believe the Personal Trainer erred most by not
watching his client…

…This guy was turning greener and greener by the second.

And the laughing Personal Trainer, acting cool to his buddies,
didn’t even notice.

And then it happened.

And anyone actually watching this freak show would have predicted it.

I did.

The middle-aged client leaps off the leg press machine (don’t even
get me started on that one), and runs to the closest garbage can.

In a lucky twist of fate, he managed to pull the lid off the top
just as the vomit started soaring out of his mouth.

And the Personal Trainer laughed..

He didn’t once go over to his client and see that he was o.k.

He just laughed, smirked and grinned at his buddies.

The vomit stopped, the lid was placed back on the garbage can and
everyone in the gym went back to there own business.

The smug Personal Trainer walked over to the now completely
exhausted and defeated middle-aged client and says – and this is
not me exaggerating -

“Good job.  That’s the price you have to pay.  Let’s get back to
